A Ugandan boy at a school sportsday. He runs as fast as he can to be the first one at the other side with his jerrycan. Not very easy with a pair of trousers that drop when he lets go. But he is glad to be able to attend school. It is doubtful if his school fees can be paid for the next term by his aunt, who takes care of eight other orphans, besides her own five children. If the fees can't be paid, he will join the large group of illiterates. And this pair of trousers will have to do for a while. This is an example of the boys and girls that ICCF Holland helps. These orphans are the victims of the highest HIV infection rate in the world. Parents die of AIDS, just when their children need them most. An extended family can be their new home. Fortunately there is enough food in this farming district. But who will pay their school fees, medical aid, etc.? That is where ICCF Holland helps in the hope that the education will help them to be able to take care of themselves, and their children, in the long run. ICCF Holland is a small organisation, run by volunteers. 99.3% of the donated money was sent to Uganda in 2001. Compare that to, for example, Foster Parents Plan: A recent report shows that only 50% of their money goes to the children and projects. Highlight: Users of the text editor Vim are asked to help ICCF helping children in Kibaale. An article in the Linux Journal magazine (june 2001) gives background information. You can find it here. |
